Le cascate di Mountain Pine Ridge / Mountain Pine Ridge Waterfalls

Belize significa natura. Natura anche inaccessibile (o difficilmente accessibile).

Come le tre cascate della zona della Mountain Pine Ridge: come dice il nome stesso, in questa riserva di oltre 500 km quadrati la vegetazione è formata principalmente da…pini montani. Ebbene sì, nella parte occidentale del Belize, Paese caraibico, formata da altipiani, si trova una vegetazione che normalmente troveremmo in montagna. Le temperature non sono quelle montane, comunque.

Un’altra caratteristica di questa zona è la terra rossa che compone la strada sterrata.

Dicevo che questa zona è difficilmente accessibile perché, nonostante sia a una cinquantina di chilometri da Belmopan, i continui saliscendi su strada sterrata piena di buche rendono il tragitto lungo e movimentato: assicuratevi di non soffrire di mal d’auto se voleste fare un giro in questa riserva per vedere le cascate che qui si trovano.

Tre sono le cascate principali: le Thousand Foot Falls, le più alte dell’America Centrale con i loro 480 metri. Purtroppo sono visibili solo da un punto panoramico lontano, ma è comunque un bello spettacolo da vedere, soprattutto per chi cerca tranquillità: a parte un paio di casette di legno dove vivono i custodi e la costruzione con i bagni e un tavolo da pic-nic, non c’è nulla, per cui è il posto perfetto per chi volesse rilassarsi nel verde dedicandosi al birdwatching.

In una zona più “turistica” (ci sono tre resort vicini), si trovano invece le Big Rock Falls e le Five Sisters Falls (queste ultime si trovano proprio all’interno di uno dei resort, e, a meno di non alloggiare lì, è possibile rimanere solo per 30 minuti).

Queste due cascate formano delle pozze balneabili. Ci si arriva tramite un sentierino che scende lungo il pendio della collina.

Le Big Rock Falls sono più basse (46 metri), ma più impetuose delle Thousand Foot Falls, e, anche qui, a parte le rocce dove stendersi a prendere il sole, non c’è nulla: solo natura e il rumore delle cascate.

Le Five Sisters Falls, all’interno del Gaia Lodge, sono invece 5 cascate parallele che terminano in una piscina naturale: questa zona, in quanto parte del resort, è attrezzata con capannine e sdraio per gli ospiti, coniugando la bellezza e la tranquillità della natura con le comodità di un resort a basso impatto ambientale.

Il resort cura anche un giardino botanico con molte varietà di orchidee e altri fiori.

Purtroppo, durante la stagione delle piogge le acque delle pozze non sono molto pulite per fare il bagno, ma le cascate meritano la visita.

As for the three waterfalls of the Mountain Pine Ridge: as the name says, the vegetation in this reserve of 500 squared-kilometers is composed of…mountain pines.

Yes, in the Western part of Belize, a Caribbean Country, you can find a kind of vegetation that is usually located in the mountains. The temperature is not that of the mountains, though.

Another characteristic of this area is the red soil of the road.

I said that this area is difficult to access because, although it is located only 50 km from Belmopan, the continuous ups and downs on rocky roads filled with holes make the journey really long: make sure you don’t suffer from car sickness if you want to enter this reserve to see the waterfalls.

There are three main waterfalls: Thousand Foot Waterfalls, the highest in Central America with their height of 480 meters. Unfortunately, they can be seen only from a panoramic platform very far from it, but it’s still nice to see it, especially if you are looking for peace: a couple of wooden houses where the guardians live, the building with toilets and a pic-nic table and that’s it, nothing else, so it’s a perfect sport for who wants to relax in the nature.

In a more “touristic” area (there are three resorts), there are Big Rock Falls and Five Sisters Falls (the latter are inside one of the resorts, and non-guests are allowed to stay 30 minutes only).

These waterfalls originate ponds where you can swim. You can get there through a small trail.

Big Rock Falls are lower (46 meters), but faster. Here, as at Thousand Foot Falls, except for the rocks where to lie to sunbathe, there is nothing: only nature, and the relaxing noise of waterfalls.

Five Sisters Falls, inside Gaia Lodge, are five parallel waterfalls which end in a natural pool: since these waterfalls are inside the resort, it is equipped with chairs and umbrellas for guests, mixing the beauty and the peace of the nature with the comfort of a low-impact resort.

Furthermore, the resort takes care of a botanical garden which includes many types of orchids and other flowers.

Unfortunately, during the rainy seasons the ponds’ waters are not very clean to bathe, but the waterfalls are worth the visit anyway.
