After living in Nanjing for two years, I have to admit that I haven't been a good Nanjinger. You must wonder why. Well, many people who arrive here maybe are not that interested in local history or landscapes, but I'm always passionate about understanding the places where I live or that I visit. So, to my surprise, just the other day, when I was going around the city because of my job, I discovered this beautiful place.

Yuejianglou (阅江楼, Yuèjiānglóu) is a 52 meters high tower built in Ming style on top of the 78 meters high Lion Mountain (狮子山, Shīzishān), in the north-western Xiaguan District (下关区, Xiàguān Qū) of Nanjing.

I appreciated it very much not only for its beauty, but also because I had the chance to have a 360° view of Nanjing. From the seventh floor of the tower you can see both the Yangtze River (from this view comes the name of the place, “the tower for viewing the river”), up to Pukou District (浦口区, Pŭkŏu Qū) on the other side,South up to Xinjiekou and East up to the Purple  Mountain. Just make sure you pick a sunny + not polluted day to go there, although it’s not easy to get the second one in Nanjing. I got a sunny day and not too smoggy day, but if it is perfectly clear, I think that the 40 rmb entrance ticket are even more worth.

Inside the building, from the third floor, there is a 12x8 meters ceramic painting about the travels of Zheng He (郑和), the famous Chinese explorer that between 1405 and 1433 lead seven expeditions in all Asia up to East Africa’s coasts.

The building is quite new, since it was built in 2001 by Nanjing city government to fulfill the desire of Emperor Zhu Yuangzhang/Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), who in 1360 wanted to build a tower in this area, where he defeated the army of Chen Youliang. (Emperor Hongwu is the same one buried in the Ming Tomb situated in the Purple Mountain in Nanjing.)

Nonostante siano due anni che vivo a Nanchino, devo ammettere che non sono stata una perfetta "Nanjinger". Magari vi chiederete perché. Beh, a molti che arrivano in città magari non interessano particolarmente la storia locale o i paesaggi, ma a me è sempre piaciuto viaggiare e conoscere i posti in cui vivo o che visito. Quindi, con mia sorpresa, ho scoperto solo poco tempo fa l'esistenza di questa torre, mentre ero in giro per lavoro.

Yuejianglou (阅江楼, Yuèjiānglóu) è una torre di 52 metri, costruita in stile Ming sulla cima della Collina del Leone (狮子山, Shīzishān), una collina di 78 metri nel distretto di Xiaguan (下关区, Xiàguān Qū), nell’area nord-occidentale di Nanchino.

Il motivo principale per cui mi è piaciuto lo Yuejianglou è la visione a 360° della città. Dal settimo piano della torre, infatti, si possono vedere, da un lato, il fiume Azzurro/Yangtze (da cui deriva il nome, “la torre da cui vedere il fiume”), fino al distretto di Pukou (浦口区, Pŭkŏu Qū) dall’altra parte del fiume; dall’altro la città fino a Xinjiekou a sud e alla Collina Purpurea a est. Sarebbe preferibile riuscire a trovare un giorno soleggiato + con inquinamento al minimo per visitare lo Yuejianglou, anche se per la seconda condizione è necessario armarsi di santa pazienza. Il giorno da me scelto era soleggiato e con inquinamento leggermente ridotto, anche se in lontananza riuscivo a vedere il Golden Eagle e il Jinling Hotel. Con il cielo terso i 40 rmb dell’ingresso sono ancora meglio spesi.

All’interno della torre, a partire dal terzo piano, si staglia una pittura su ceramica di 12x8 metri raffigurante i viaggi di Zheng He (郑和), il famoso esploratore cinese che tra il 1405 e il 1433 ha guidato sette spedizioni in tutta l’Asia, fino alle coste dell’Africa orientale.

La torre è una costruzione piuttosto recente, del 2001, eretta per realizzare il desiderio dell’Imperatore Zhu Yuangzhang/Hongwu della dinastia Ming (1368-1644), che nel 1360 avrebbe voluto costruire una torre in quella zona, dove aveva sconfitto il nemico Chen Youliang. (L’Imperatore Hongwu è lo stesso tumulato nell’area delle Tombe Ming situate sulla Collina Purpurea.)
