L’autunno è una delle mie stagioni preferite, soprattutto
per i colori che le foglie degli alberi assumono in questo periodo. E anche per
la presenza della zucca, ortaggio che ho iniziato ad apprezzare alcuni anni fa.
Quest’anno per la prima volta sono andata alla Festa della Zucca di Venzone, che da ventiquattro anni si tiene annualmente il terzo fine settimana
di ottobre nella cittadella fortificata friulana a una trentina di chilometri
da Udine.
La ben rodata manifestazione prevede un ricco programma di
eventi in stile medievale, come la sfilata dei gruppi rievocativi dei borghi
friulani, sbandieratori, dimostrazioni di torture medievali, nonché spettacoli
teatrali e musicali. Uno spettacolo che mi è piaciuto particolarmente è stato
quello di un gruppo che ha chiamato alcune persone dal pubblico a essere
giudici in un paio di procedimenti basati sulle fiabe (ad esempio, se la
principessa sul pisello aveva ragione a richiedere i danni per il mal di
schiena derivatole dal legume posto sotto i materassi).
Per le vie del borgo si trovano bancarelle di prodotti
artigianali tipici e di dolcetti e focacce a base di zucca, i cui venditori indossavano
abiti in stile medievale. Anche le taverne a tema del centro preparano per l’occasione
menù speciali rendendo protagonista assoluto l’ortaggio arancione.
Ovviamente, non potevano mancare la sfida alla zucca più
grande e le zucche intagliate.
In chiesa erano presenti alcuni membri dello “ScriptoriumForo Iuliense” della Scuola Italiana Amanuensi, disponibili a scrivere i nomi
dei richiedenti come facevano i monaci amanuensi qualche centinaio di anni fa.
La festa mi ha talmente entusiasmata che una volta a casa ho
“dovuto” preparare una torta a base di zucca!

Autumn is one
of my favorite seasons, especially for foliage, and also for pumpkins,
vegetable that I started to appreciate a few years ago.
For the
first time this year, I went to the Pumpkin Festival in Venzone, held for
twenty-four years now the third weekend of October in this small village thirty
kilometers far from Udine.
The well-organized
event includes a rich program of small “Medieval style” events, such as the
parade of commemorative groups from the villages in Friuli, twirlers,
demonstrations of medieval tortures, as well as theatre and musical shows. I especially
appreciated a theatre piece in which actors invited some members of the audience
to judge some cases based on fables (such as whether the Princess had the right
to ask for compensation for the backache due to the pea under her mattress).
Lots of
stalls of typical crafts and pumpkin sweets and bread were located along the
small streets, vendors wearing typical medieval clothes. Pubs and restaurants
also had special meals whose main ingredient was the orange vegetable.
Obviously,
the challenge of the biggest pumpkin and carved pumpkins was part of the event.
Members of
the “Scriptorium Foro Iuliense” of the Italian School of Amanuensis were in the
church, ready to write names on papers in the style of amanuensis monks.
I was so
fascinated by this fest that, once home, I “had to” bake a pumpkin cake!
